"Quick-drying" by the numbers
There is no universal standard for the term "quick-drying." That is why we present our measured figures exactly as they are.
There is no fixed definition for quick-drying
For UV protection, there is a rating called UPF. For antibacterial properties, there is the SEK mark. However, there is no such common benchmark for "quick-drying."
Every company uses its own criteria to label products as "quick-drying." Therefore, just comparing the words does not tell you which one is faster.
1 second to absorb
These are the results measured by the Kaken Test Center, a general incorporated foundation.
Using the JIS L 1907 drop test, we measured the time it takes for water droplets to be absorbed into the fabric. For CORE SHIELD® fabric, it took 1 second on the reverse side that touches the skin.
This refers to how quickly sweat is transferred to the fabric instead of lingering on the skin.
Almost dry in 50 minutes
Next, we measured how quickly the absorbed water evaporates. In an environment of 20°C and 65% humidity, we dropped 0.3ml of water and measured the residual moisture rate over time.
Figure 1: Changes in diffusion residual moisture rate
Measured the residual moisture rate over time after dropping 0.3ml of water in an environment of 20°C and 65% RH. Kaken Test Center, a general incorporated foundation.
The rate drops to approximately one-fifth in 30 minutes, 5.2% in 40 minutes, and 0.1% in 50 minutes. From 55 minutes onward, it is 0.0%.
| Time Elapsed | Residual Moisture | Time Elapsed | Residual Moisture |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 min | 100.0% | 30 min | 22.0% |
| 10 min | 73.3% | 40 min | 5.2% |
| 20 min | 47.1% | 45 min | 1.6% |
| 25 min | 34.3% | 50 min | 0.1% |
Takisada-Nagoya Co., Ltd., the developer of the material, states that it dries in about half the time compared to standard polyester materials. The figures above are the result of measuring this fabric alone, not a comparison.
Post-sweat chill and drying
After sweating, you may feel cold when the wind hits you or when you step into the shade. This is because your body heat is taken away when moisture evaporates from wet fabric.
During the second half of a round of golf, while taking a break from outdoor work, or in the early mornings and evenings of autumn—the situation after you sweat is often more problematic than the sweating itself.
That is why we measure both the speed of absorption and the speed of drying. Absorbing in 1 second and drying in 50 minutes. These are just numbers, but they should serve as useful criteria for your decision.
※ The figures stated are all test values for the fabric alone. They do not indicate effects when worn.
